New Bill Slashes Sentencing Thresholds for Fentanyl Traffickers as Death Toll Climbs
Seventy thousand Americans dead every year from fentanyl. Let that number sink in for a moment. That’s not a statistic from some war zone halfway across the world. That’s here, in our communities, our neighborhoods, the places where we’re supposed to feel safe. And yet our federal sentencing laws have been treating the dealers peddling this poison like they’re running some kind of minor operation.
Rep. Marlin Stutzman is done with that nonsense. The Indiana Republican is introducing a House companion to Sen. John Kennedy’s No Leniency for Fentanyl Dealers Act, and honestly, it’s about time someone in Washington decided to match the punishment to the crime. The legislation takes a sledgehammer to the current mandatory minimum thresholds, and if you ask me, those thresholds have been an embarrassment from day one.
