American mountaineer Shelley Johannesen, 53, was killed Monday after an avalanche struck her while descending Mount Makalu in Nepal, the world’s fifth-highest peak. Johannesen had successfully reached the summit before the avalanche hit near Camp 3 at roughly 23,600 feet.
