Two Utah Officers Killed, Deputy Wounded in Domestic Call Shooting
Authorities said bystanders convinced the gunman to set down his weapon.
Two police officers in northern Utah were shot and killed Sunday night while responding to a domestic disturbance. A sheriff’s deputy was also wounded but is expected to recover.
According to the Brigham City Police Department, the incident began around 9:30 p.m. after multiple 911 hang-up calls were traced to a home near North Park Elementary School. Officers from the Tremonton Garland Police Department and a deputy from the Box Elder County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched.
As one officer spoke with an individual outside the home, police said an armed man emerged and opened fire, killing the officer. A second officer was struck and killed while attempting to assist.
The Box Elder County deputy, still inside his vehicle, was shot along with his police service dog. Both were taken for treatment and were reported to be in fair condition.
Authorities said bystanders convinced the gunman to set down his weapon. He was taken into custody without further violence. His name has not yet been released, but officials stated he will face aggravated murder charges.
The identities of the fallen officers are being withheld pending family notification. In a statement, Brigham City Police said, “Tragedies like these rock an entire community, state and even nation. These officers and their families served their every day, and they will forever be remembered as heroes.”
The shooting prompted a large law enforcement response, including SWAT units from surrounding counties. Police confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public.
Residents described hearing what they first thought were fireworks before realizing gunfire had erupted. One driver reported his car was struck by a bullet as he passed near the scene.
The investigation is ongoing.
